TAC Construction Moves Forward
Following our Groundbreaking on September 16, 2007, Artspace and DEVCON along with their many subcontractors got busy preparing the site, drilling the pilings and pouring the footings for the two buildings along the river which will house 100 units of affordable housing.

One last piece of deconstruction took place when the east end of the Tannyard Building was taken down and sealed off to make room for the northern most of the housing units. The Tannyard Building, Beam House, Kron House, Change Room and Hide House are being preserved and will be reused as Working Studios for artists and groups of artists and as an historic backdrop for telling the story of the Tanning Industry of Santa Cruz County.

Construction on the Live/Work Housing began with the preparation of the building pads for each of two four story buildings that will house 100 units of affordable housing. Next came the drilling of over 1,400 pilings to stabilize the soil and provide a foundation for the buildings. Using a new and proven process an auger drilled holes 50 feet deep and as the drill bit was withdrawn from the hole, concrete was forced in under pressure to cast in place pilings in a pattern engineered to stabilize the soil and provide a firm footing for the Buildings. |
Next came the pouring of the footings for each of the buildings. Miles of rebar were laid in trenches secured and covered with tons of concrete to form the footings for the deck that will become the floor for the ground level garage of each of the housing buildings. Because of the hustle and dedication of the workers on the job, DEVCON was able to get all of the footings poured before the most recent storms hit and they were able to start pouring pads and pillars for the first floor of the structure. Artspace and the Tannery Arts Center will hold a series of outreach and information meetings at the end of March for people interested in living at the Tannery Arts Center. These meetings to be held through out the county will let people know what they need to qualify to live in the affordable units.
